Astonished and appalled though his many admirers will be, this letterconstitutes the Statute of Secrecy and establishing Wizard rule over Muggles.What a blow for those who have always portrayed Dumbledore as the Muggle-borns’greatest champion! How hollow those speeches promoting Muggle rights seem inthe light of this damning new evidence! How despicable does Albus Dumbledoreappear, busy plotting his rise to power when he should have been mourning hismother and caring for his sister!

Thisdreadful coffin-side brawl, known only to those few who attended ArianaDumbledore’s funeral, raises several questions. Why exactly did AberforthDumbledore blame Albus for his sister’s death? Was it, as “Batty” pretends, amere effusion of grief? Or could there have been some more concrete reason forhis fury? Grindelwald, expelled from Durmstrang for the near-fatal attacks uponfellow students, fled the country hours after the girl’s death, and Albus (outof shame or fear?) never saw him again, not until forced to do so by the pleasof the Wizarding world.

NeitherDumbledore nor Grindelwald ever seems to have referred to this brief boyhoodfriendship in later life. However, there can be no doubt that Dumbledore delayed, for some five years of turmoil, fatalities, and disappearances, hisattack upon Gellert Grindelwald. Was it lingering affection for the man or fearof exposure as his once best friend that caused Dumbledore to hesitate? Was itonly reluctantly that Dumbledore set out to capture the man he was once sodelighted he had met?

He obeyed.For a moment he had no idea what she was talking about, but, looking moreclosely with the aid of his lit wand, he saw that Dumbledore had replaced the Aof Albus with a tiny version of the same triangular mark inscribed upon TheTales of Beedle the Bard.

Harry turned to look at Ron and Hermione.Neither of them seemed to have understood what Xenophilius had said either.

“The Deathly Hallows?”

“That’s right,” said Xenophilius. “You haven’t heard ofthem? I’m not surprised. Very, very few wizards believe. Witness thatknuckle-headed young man at your brother’s wedding,” he nodded at Ron, “whoattacked me for sporting the symbol of a well-known Dark wizard! Suchignorance. There is nothing Dark about the Hallows – at least not in that crudesense. One simply uses the symbol to reveal oneself to other believers, in thehope that they might help one with the Quest.”

He stirred several lumps of sugar into his Gurdyrootinfusion and drank some.

“I’m sorry,” said Harry, “I still don’t reallyunderstand.”

To be polite, he took a sip from his cuptoo, and almost gagged: The stuff was quite disgusting, as though someone hadliquidized bogey-flavored Every Flavor Beans.

“Well, you see, believers seek the Deathly Hallows,”said Xenophilius, smacking his lips in apparent appreciation of the Gurdyrootinfusion.

“But what are the Deathly Hallows?” askedHermione.

Xenophilius set aside his empty teacup.

“I assume that you are familiar with ‘TheTale of the Three Brothers’?”

Harry said, “No,” but Ron and Hermione both said,“Yes.” Xenophilius nodded gravely.

“Well, well, Mr. Potter, the whole thing starts with‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’… I have a copy somewhere…”

He glanced vaguely around the room, at the piles ofparchment and books, but Hermione said, “I’ve got a copy, Mr. Lovegood, I’vegot it right here.”

And she pulled out The Tales of Beedle the Bard fromthe small, beaded bag.

“The original?” inquired Xenophilius sharply, and whenshe nodded, he said, “Well then, why don’t you read it out aloud? Much the bestway to make sure we all understand.”

“Er… all right,” said Hermione nervously.She opened the book, and Harry saw that the symbol they were investigatingheaded the top of the page as she gave a little cough, and began to read.

“‘There were once three brothers who weretraveling along a lonely, winding road at twilight –’“

“Midnight, our mum always told us,“said Ron, who had stretched out, arms behind his head, to listen. Hermione shothim a look of annoyance.

“Sorry, I just thinkit’s a bit spookier if it’s midnight!” said Ron.

“Yeah, because wereally need a bit more fear in our lives,” said Harry before he could stophimself. Xenophilius did not seem to be paying much attention, but was staringout of the window at the sky. “Go on, Hermione.”
“是啊，我们的生活里的确需要多一点恐惧。”哈利忍不住脱口而出。谢诺菲留斯似乎没太注意，而是一直盯着窗外的天空。“继续讲吧，赫敏。”
“In time, the brothers reached a rivertoo deep to wade through and too dangerous to swim across. However, thesebrothers were learned in the magical arts, and so they simply waved their wandsand made a bridge appear across the treacherous water. They were halfway acrossit when they found their path blocked by a hooded figure.“
他们走着走着，来到了一条河边，水太深了，无法蹚过，游过去也太危险。然而，三兄弟精通魔法，一挥魔杖，危险莫测的水上就出现了一座桥。走到桥中央时，一个戴兜帽的身影挡住了他们的去路。
“‘And Death spoke tothem –’”

“Sorry,“ interjectedHarry, “but Death spoke to them?”

“It’s a fairy tale,Harry!”

“Right, sorry. Go on.”

“‘And Death spoke to them. He was angrythat he had been cheated out of the three new victims, for travelers usuallydrowned in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to congratulate thethree brothers upon their magic, and said that each had earned a prize forhaving been clever enough to evade him.“

So Deathpicked up a stone from the riverbank and gave it to the second brother, andtold him that the stone would have the power to bring back the dead.”
老二是一位傲慢的男子汉，他决定继续羞辱死神，想要的是能够让死人复活的能力。死神就从岸上捡起一块石头给了老二，告诉他这块石头有起死回生的能力。
“‘And then Death asked the third andyoungest brother what he would like. The youngest brother was the humblest andalso the wisest of the brothers, and he did not trust Death. So he asked forsomething that would enable him to go forth from that place without beingfollowed by Death. And Death, most unwillingly, handed over his own Cloak ofInvisibility.’”然后死神问最年轻的老三要什么。老三是最谦虚也是最聪明的一个，而且他不相信死神。因此他要一件东西，可以让他离开那里而不被死神跟随。死神极不情愿地把自己的隐形衣给了他。
“Death’s got anInvisibility Cloak?“ Harry interrupted again.

“So he can sneak upon people,” said Ron. “Sometimes he gets bored of running at them, flapping hisarms and shrieking… sorry, Hermione.”

“‘Then Death stood aside and allowedthe three brothers to continue on their way, and they did so talking withwonder of the adventure they had had and admiring Death’s gifts.“

“‘Indue course the brothers separated, each for his own destination.”

Naturally, with the Elder Wand as hisweapon, he could not fail to win the duel that followed. Leaving his enemy deadupon the floor the oldest brother proceeded to an inn, where he boasted loudlyof the powerful wand he had snatched from Death himself, and of how it made himinvincible.”
老大走了一个多星期，来到一个遥远的小山村，跟一位巫师争吵起来。自然，他用那根接骨木做成的“老魔杖”作武器，无疑会获取决斗的胜利。对手倒地死后，他继续前行，走进了一个小酒馆，大声夸耀自己从死神手上得来的强大魔杖如何战无不胜。
“‘That very night,another wizard crept upon the oldest brother as he lay, wine-sodden upon hisbed. The thief took the wand and for good measure, slit the oldest brother’sthroat.”
就在那个晚上，老大喝得酩酊大醉后，另一个巫师蹑手蹑脚地来到他床边偷走了魔杖，并且割断了他的喉咙。
“‘And so Death tookthe first brother for his own.”
就这样，死神取走了老大的命。
“‘Meanwhile, thesecond brother journeyed to his own home, where he lived alone. Here he tookout the stone that had the power to recall the dead, and turned it thrice inhis hand. To his amazement and his delight, the figure of the girl he had oncehoped to marry, before her untimely death, appeared at once before him.”
与此同时，老二回到了他独自居住的家，拿出可以起死回生的石头，在手里转了三次。让他惊喜交加的是，他想娶的但不幸早逝的女孩立刻出现在他面前。
“‘Yet she was sad and cold, separatedfrom him as by a veil. Though she had returned to the mortal world, she did nottruly belong there and suffered. “‘And so Death tookthe second brother from his own.”

“‘But though Deathsearched for the third brother for many years, he was never able to find him.It was only when he had attained a great age that the youngest brother finallytook off the Cloak of Invisibility and gave it to his son. And the he greetedDeath as an old friend, and went with him gladly, and, equals, they departedthis life.’”
但是，死神找了老三好多年，却始终没能找到他。老三一直活到很老以后，才最终脱下隐形衣，交给了他的儿子，然后像老朋友见面一样迎接死神，并以平等的身份，高兴地同他一道，离开了人间。
Hermione closed the book. It was a moment or two before Xenophilius seemed torealize that she had stopped reading; then he withdrew his gaze from the windowand said: “Well, there you are.”

“Sorry?” saidHermione, sounding confused.

He picked upa quill from a packed table at his elbow, and pulled a torn piece of parchmentfrom between more books.

“The Elder Wand,” hesaid, and drew a straight vertical line upon the parchment. “The ResurrectionStone,” he said, and added a circle on top of the line. “The Cloak ofInvisibility,” he finished, enclosing both line and circle in a triangle, tomake the symbols that so intrigued Hermione. “Together,” he said, “the DeathlyHallows.”

“But there’s nomention of the words ‘Deathly Hallows’ in the story,” said Hermione.

“Well, of coursenot,” said Xenophilius, maddeningly smug. “That is a children’s tale, told toamuse rather than to instruct. Those of us who understand these matters, however,recognize that the ancient story refers to three objects, or Hallows, which, ifunited, will make the possessor master of Death.”

“Ah, but the ThirdHallow is a true Cloak of Invisibility, Miss Granger! We are talking about a cloak that reallyand truly renders the wearer completely invisible, and endures eternally,giving constant and impenetrable concealment, no matter what spells are cast atit. How many cloaks have you ever seen like that, Miss Granger?”

It so happened that a cloak exactly like the oneXenophilius had just described was in the room with them at that very moment.

“Exactly,” saidXenophilius, as if he had defeated them all in reasoned argument. “None of youhave ever seen such a thing. The possessor would be immeasurably rich, would henot?”

He glanced out of the window again. The sky was now tinged with the faintesttrace of pink.

“All right,” saidHermione, disconcerted. “Say the Cloak existed… what about that stone, Mr.Lovegood? The thing you call the Resurrection Stone?”

“What of it?”

“Well, how can thatbe real?”

“But that’s – I’m sorry, but that’scompletely ridiculous! How can I possibly prove it doesn’t exist? Do you expectme to get hold of – of all the pebbles in the world and test them? I mean, youcould claim that anything’s real if the only basis for believing in it is thatnobody’s proved it doesn’t exist!”

“Yes, you could,”said Xenophilius. “I am glad to see that you are opening your mind a little.”

“So the Elder Wand,”said Harry quickly, before Hermione could retort, “you think that exists too?”

“Oh, well, in thatcase there is endless evidence,” said Xenophilius. “The Elder Wand is theHallow that is most easily traced, because of the way in which it passes fromhand to hand.”

“Which is what?”asked Harry.

Of thedreadful Loxias, who took the wand from Baraabas Deverill, whom he had killed?The bloody trail of the Elder Wand is splattered across the pages of Wizardinghistory.”

Harryglanced at Hermione. She was frowning at Xenophilius, but she did notcontradict him.
哈利瞥了赫敏一眼。她朝谢诺菲留斯皱着眉头，但没有反驳。
“So where do youthink the Elder Wand is now?” asked Ron.
“那么您认为老魔杖如今在哪儿呢？”罗恩问。
“Alas, who knows?” said Xenophilius,as he gazed out of the window. “Who knows where the Elder Wand lies hidden? Thetrail goes cold with Arcus and Livius. Who can say which of them reallydefeated Loxias, and which took the wand? And who can say who may have defeatedthem? History, alas, does not tell us.”

There was apause. Finally Hermione asked stiffly, “Mr. Lovegood, does the Peverell family have anything to do with the Deathly Hallows?”
一阵沉默。最终赫敏生硬地问道：洛夫古德先生，佩弗利尔家族同死亡圣器有什么关系吗？
Xenophiliuslooked taken aback as something shifted in Harry’s memory, but he could notlocate it. Peverell… he had heard that name before…

“But you have beenmisleading me, young woman!” said Xenophilius, now sitting up much straighterin his chair and goggling at Hermione. “I thought you were new to the HallowsQuest! Many of us Questers believe that the Peverells have everything –everything! – to do with the Hallows!”

“Who are thePeverells?” asked Ron.

“That was the nameon the grave with the mark on it, in Godric’s Hollow,” said Hermione, stillwatching Xenophilius. “Ignotus Peverell.”

“Exactly!” saidXenophilius, his forefinger raised pedantically. “The sign of the Death Hallowson Ignotus’s grave is conclusive proof!”

Just keep your head down, mind your own business,and you’ll be okay. Come to think of it,” Ron added, “maybe that story’s why elder wands are supposed to be unlucky.”
“咳，那个故事只是讲来教育小孩子的东西，不是吗？‘别惹麻烦，别跟人打架，别乱碰不该碰的东西！埋头干你自己的事就好啦！’我想起来了，”罗恩添了一句，“可能这个故事也说明，为什么接骨木魔杖常被认为不吉利。”

“One of those superstitions, isn’t it?‘May-born witches will marry Muggles.’ ‘Jinx by twilight, undone by midnight.’‘Wand of cider, never prosper.’ You must have heard them. My mum’s full ofthem.”

“Yes, but could youkeep your trap shut?” said Hermione, looking skeptical. “You know the only truething he said to us was that there have been stories about extra-powerful wandsfor hundreds of years.”

Hermione looked exasperated: The expression was so endearingly familiar thatHarry and Ron grinned at each other.

“I don’t think so,” said Ron. “It’s adamn sight harder making stuff up when you’re under stress than you’d think. Ifound that out when the Snatchers caught me. It was much easier pretending tobe Stan, because I knew a bit about him, than inventing a whole new person. OldLovegood was under loads of pressure, trying to make sure we stayed put. Ireckon he told us the truth, or what he thinks is the truth, just to keep ustalking.”

“Hang on, though,”said Ron. “The Chamber of Secrets was supposed to be a myth, wasn’t it?”

“You keep saying that, but one of them can,” said Ron. “Harry’s Invisibility Cloak –”

“The Tale of theThree Brothers’ is a story,” said Hermione firmly. “A story about how humansare frightened of death. If surviving was as simple as hiding under theInvisibility Cloak, we’d have everything we need already!”
“三兄弟的传说只是个故事，”赫敏坚定地说，“一个关于人类如何害怕死亡的故事。如果活着仅仅是藏在隐形衣里面那么简单，那我们就已经拥有需要的一切了！”
“I don’t know. Wecould do with an unbeatable wand,” said Harry, turning the blackthorn wand heso disliked over in his fingers.

“There’s no such thing, Harry!”
“没有这样的东西，哈利！”
“You said there have been loads ofwands – the Death stick and whatever they were called –”

“All right, even ifyou want to kid yourself the Elder Wand’s real, what about the ResurrectionStone?” Her fingers sketched quotation marks around the name, and her tonedripped sarcasm. “No magic can raise the dead, and that’s that!”
“好了，即使你想骗自己相信老魔杖是真的，那么复活石呢？”她手指在这个词两边打着引号，声音里透着挖苦的味道，“没有一种魔法可以起死回生，就是这样！”
“When my wand connected with You-Know-Who’s, it made my mum and dad appear…and Cedric…”
“当我的魔杖连接上神秘人的，我爸爸妈妈就会出现……还有塞得里克……”
“But they weren’treally back from the dead, were they?” said Hermione. “Those kind of –of paleimitations aren’t the same as truly bringing someone back to life.”
“但是他们并没有真的从阴间回来呀，不是吗？”赫敏说，“这些——苍白的代用品并不是真正让人复活。”
“But she, the girl in the tale, didn’treally come back, did she? The story says that once people are dead, theybelong with the dead. But the second brother still got to see her and talk toher, didn’t he? He even lived with her for a while…”
“但是她，故事里的那个女孩，也没有真的回来呀，不是吗？故事说人们一旦去世，就属于阴间了。但是，那个老二仍然看到了她，和她说话，不是吗？甚至还和她一起生活了一段时间……”
He sawconcern and something less easily definable in Hermione’s expression. Then, asshe glanced at Ron, Harry realized that it was fear: He had scared her with histalk of living with dead people.
他看见赫敏有点担忧，还有一点不易描述的表情。后来赫敏瞥了一眼罗恩，哈利才意识到那是恐惧：他谈论的与死去的人一同生活吓着她。
“So that Peverell bloke who’s buried in Godric’s Hollow,” he said hastily, trying to soundrobustly sane, “you don’t know anything about him, then?”
“埋在戈德里克山谷的那个佩弗利尔，”哈利急忙说，努力使自己听上去头脑清醒，“你对他一点都不了解吗？”
“No,” she replied,looking relieved at the change of subject. “I looked him up after I saw themark on his grave; if he’d been anyone famous or done anything important, I’msure he’d be in one of our books. The only place I’ve managed to find the name‘Peverell’ Is Nature’s Nobility: A Wizarding Genealogy. I borrowed it fromKreacher,” she explained as Ron raised his eyebrows. “It lists the pure-bloodfamilies that are now extinct in the male line. Apparently the Peverells wereone of the earliest families to vanish.”
